FOREVER IS MADE UP OF MANY NOWS

23 November 2022 - 14 January 2023

Since 2019, Brisa Galeria has been organising exhibitions with guest artists in dialogue with Daniel Mattar's work.

For the current exhibition, "Forever is made up of many nows", Brazilian visual artist and researcher Patricia Goùvea brings "Imagens Posteriores", a series of analogue photographs of landscapes taken during trips through various continents. In these images, the artist invests in exposures that absorb the movements of her path, provoking the effect of an unpredictable displacement that will only be contemplated when she returns home through the development of the slides. Goùvea's intermissions question the momentary as a decisive step in forming a photograph. Her images tell us more of their processes than of the final result itself, an analogy to the measurable continuity of Chronos (the one subordinated to the clock) and the timely intensity that cannot be calculated of Kairós.

As a counterpoint, Mattar presents the series of paintings "Nova Pele". For the last five years, he has used, as an object of his photographic research, inks and their packages whose volume and depth question reality. In his works in this exhibition, the photographs are canvases for his paintings, embodying the materiality of oil paint, which is catalysed by the image and overflowed by the surface. This pictorial experience displaces the photographic image from the present's perfect rest; disfigures a moment among others, creating abstract flat colour blocks that refer to Goùvea's "Imagens Posteriores".

As in Emily Dickinson's poem "Forever is composed of nows", which inspires the name of the exhibition, time here is an agent that has neither a beginning nor an end. It is infinite in the many "nows" of Patricia Goùvea and Daniel Mattar's encounter. Facing each other, artists with different inspirations but in dialogue on the layers of duration, colour and movement of their productions. Lightnesses that prove the encounter of parallels in the infinite.
