Maria Ribeiro was born in Lisbon in 1983, where she currently lives and works. She earned her Bachelor's degree in Sculpture from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon in 2017, followed by a Master's degree in Sculpture from the same institution in 2020. Prior to this, she attended the Institute of Arts and Crafts (IAO) (2002/2005) at the Ricardo Espírito Santo Foundation, where she later taught as well. Since then, she has led numerous training courses in construction and sculpture at schools, museums, and other cultural institutions. Since February 2022, she has been coordinating and teaching the intensive wood sculpture course at A BASE school and is part of the faculty at Colégio Moderno.
In her artistic practice, Maria develops transdisciplinary methods that materialize in an approach combining sculpture and installation. She seeks to explore strategies that continue the research and body of work developed during her Master’s thesis: "Sculptural Intervention Spaces Between Reflection and the Activating Body". This project delves into the perception and subjective interpretation of the artwork, based on the viewer's physical and perceptual experience, activated by reflections in numerous pieces. The surrounding space is also a fundamental element of her artistic practice, aiming to foster new sensory experiences.
She has participated in various group exhibitions, notably A Mais Alta das Torres Começa no Chão (Base, Lisbon, 2024), Um Lugar Depois do Outro (289, Faro, 2023), and at Galeria Diferença (Lisbon, 2021); Lareira (Casa-Atelier Vieira da Silva, Lisbon, 2020), and Galeria Diferença 40 Anos (Lisbon, 2019).
